I have to say that I wish I found this post a bit earlier. It was mostly ignorance on my part, and now that I read your rant, I figured I wasn’t insane to think of certain things of what I’ve been seeing on the site, and I (unsurprisingly perhaps) could relate to almost everything you said here.
I was a rather “daily user” on the site last year, wrote over 800 answers and some of the uglier parts of the site rubbed off on me eventually. Still, to be fair, the site actually has few good people whom I exchanged quite routinely at times, but I can’t argue that the good majority of the people using the site seems to exhibit certain personal problems, ranging from pseudo-intellectualism, megalomania or narcissism.
You might also notice that the bits about sobbing stories and the female gender advantage could go hand-in-hand quite nicely, to the point that sometimes it could be blatantly obvious when some of them are exaggerating their experiences to attract attention. The “me me me” mentality is particularly quite strong with some users, and I dreaded that I got carried away a little bit sometimes. Certainly, big part of my problem with the site revolves around the bad experience I had with some of the more popular users there.
Thanks for putting this up.
